چکیده

A stream is a continuous version of a supply chain. It is like a series inventory system, but stock can be held at any point along a continuum, not just at discrete stages. We assume stationary parameters and aim to minimize the long-run average total cost. We show that a stationary continuous-stage echelon base-stock policy is optimal. That is, at each geographic point along the supply stream, there is a target echelon inventory level, and the optimal policy at all times is to order and dispatch material so as to move the echelon inventory position as close as possible to this target. We establish this result by showing that the solutions to certain discrete-stage systems converge monotonically to a limit, as the distances between the stages become small, and this limit solves the continuous-stage system. With demand approximated by a Brownian motion, we show that, in the continuous-stage limit, the supply stream model is equivalent to one describing first-passage times. This linkage leads to some interesting and useful results. Specifically, we obtain a partial differential equation that characterizes the optimal cost function, and we find a closed-form expression for the optimal echelon basestock levels in a certain special case, the first in the inventory literature. These expressions demonstrate that the well-known square-root law for safety stock does not apply in this context.

Pricing Strategy in an Arborescent Supply Chain System

This study develops an optimal pricing and replenishment policy in an arborescent (tree-like) supply chain system. Since it benefits the up-streams more than the down-streams when a producer, a distributor and multiple retailers are integrated, a pricing strategy with price reduction is derived to entice the down-streams to accept the incentive system with minimum total cost. Negotiation factor...

EPCIS Event-Based Traceability in Pharmaceutical Supply Chains via Automated Generation of Linked Pedigrees

In this paper we show how event processing over semantically annotated streams of events can be exploited, for implementing tracing and tracking of products in supply chains through the automated generation of linked pedigrees. In our abstraction, events are encoded as spatially and temporally oriented named graphs, while linked pedigrees as RDF datasets are their specific compositions. We prop...

Relationships between land-use and forced-pool characteristics in the Colorado Front Range

Land use practices in Colorado during the last two centuries altered the supply of sediment and water to many channels in the upper South Platte Basin. As a result of increased supply of sediment and mobility and reduced peak flows, the characteristics of pools associated with channel constrictions, referred to as forced pools, may have been altered. Increased supply of sediment and reduced tra...

Occurrence statistics of cold, streaming ions in the near-Earth magnetotail: Survey of Polar-TIDE observations

[1] Results are presented from a survey of cold ion observations in the near-Earth magnetotail using data from the Polar Thermal Ion Dynamics Experiment (TIDE). During the interval from July to December of 2001, Polar had its apogee ( 9.5 RE) near the equatorial plane in the tail region of the magnetosphere. It is shown that a lobal wind is ubiquitous in the inner tail, with low-energy (<300 eV...

Dynamic Supply Voltage Scaling of Pixel Circuits for Static Power Reduction in AMOLEDs

One-dimensional (1-D) Dynamic supply Voltage Scaling (DVS) scheme with image distortion compensation is proposed for reducing the static power consumption in AMOLED displays. A hybrid simulation platform combining MATLAB and circuit simulator HSPICE was built for the study. By applying the DVS scheme to both static images and video streams, it is shown significant power saving can be achieved (...

Does productivity drive diversity or vice versa? A test of the multivariate productivity-diversity hypothesis in streams.

The idea that productivity regulates species diversity is deeply ingrained in the field of ecology. Yet, over the past few decades, an increasing number of experiments have shown that species diversity controls, rather than simply responds to, biomass production. These contrasting perspectives have led to a seeming paradox: Is diversity the cause or the consequence of biological production? Her...
